Professor Xu, Professor Chai, Distinguished guests,
Dear colleagues, students, ladies and gentlemen:
Good morning! It gives me great pleasure to address
you on this important day marking the beginning of a new
chapter in the lives of more than one thousand six
hundred bachelor degree students who are graduating
today. First of all, I would like to extend my heartiest
congratulations to the Class of 2025, as well as your
parents and teachers. Today is not only a day of great
happiness, but also a day of gratitude – this is the
best time for you to say “thank you” to the people who
have been giving you love and support throughout your
learning journey.
Last year, The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
Shenzhen celebrated its 10th anniversary. For over a
decade, the University has been making great strides in
all aspects of institutional development – growing
impressively from a young university built on disused
factories and barren land to one that commands the
highest Gaokao cut-off for undergraduate admissions in
the Guangdong Province and is consistently ranked as the
top “Sino-foreign” collaborative university in the
country. We are proud to witness the establishment of
the School of Medicine, the School of Music, and, the
latest, the School of Artificial Intelligence, which
amply showcases the University’s unwavering commitment
to diversifying its academic offerings to present a
unique educational ecosystem to the Guangdong-Hong
Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Throughout the years, CUHK and CUHK-Shenzhen have been
working closely together under the “One brand, two
campuses” philosophy to support our country’s
development by launching multiple initiatives that
promote the sharing of knowledge and resources, the
nurturing of future-ready talents, as well as the
generation of impactful research and innovation
outcomes. Examples include the introduction of
collaborative double major programmes to offer students
a broad range of learning opportunities and exposure to
both Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and the new collaboration
with the Guangdong Science and Technology Department in
the “1+1+1” Joint Collaboration Fund Project to
co-establish a seed funding protocol in support of
meaningful research in the science, in platform
building, and the cultivation of young scholars.
Together, the two campuses serve as a successful model
for the integration of the higher education sector into
national development. The CUHK brand itself stands as
testament to a longstanding commitment to the prosperity
of our country.
Dear graduates, today is a remarkable day to remember
in your life – a day for celebrations and for rejoicing.
But you should also be aware that we are living in a
world that is getting more and more complicated every
minute, or indeed every second. Technological
advancements have presented us with unimaginable changes
in diminishing time cycles. While people in modern
society enjoy these advances by and large, but however,
at the same time, the added complexity also brings new
challenges to humanity on issues such as interpersonal
and cross-border relationships and inequality. And of
course, there's also the ethical debates from many
important issues like global misinformation trend and
the use of AI. We, as individuals and part of the global
village, have to learn to navigate these muddy waters.
Now, living in a time when analytical powers and
critical insights are crucial, actually indeed more
crucial than ever to help us to make sense of our
everyday world. Now, we have to be crystal clear about
what we want to do and how we are going to achieve our
goals. Be humble as a servant to serve others as needed.
And always think about the betterment of the society,
our country and humankind as a whole. Be prepared for
the greater responsibility that falls upon you as a
global citizen. Do not underestimate your ability to
make an impact. Think about what you can do to make the
world a better place for all.
Now, whatever your future holds, always remember the
University motto, “Through learning and temperance to
virtue” and strive for intellectual and moral enrichment
continuously. Let what you have learned here at
CUHK-Shenzhen lead you to higher levels of achievements
in your career and future goals in life. And let the
knowledge that you have gained from the university
enable you to reach deeper levels of understanding, not
just in the professional area, but also in your general,
in your lives. But on global issues that demand our
attention. We're talking about world peace, the imminent
climate crisis, and the imperative for a sustainable
world. Think globally, and yet act locally – because no
action is too small when it comes to impacting the world
positively. You may find that, at the end of the day,
the education you have received at CUHK-Shenzhen will
provide you with an edge to ride out the tides.
Now, dear student, you have travelled a long journey
to make today’s graduation possible. Now, speaking of
journey, there is a Chinese saying by Laozi that goes:
“A thousand-mile journey begins with a single
step.(千里之行始於足下)” And this quote serves as an inspiring
reminder for us that even the hardest and longest
venture starts with a simple, yet critical, first step.
Be brave to step out of your comfort zone into the
unknown. Overcome your fear and embrace the spirit of
continuous learning. Remember that persistence and
perseverance will take you towards a rewarding and life
journey future.
Now finally, I like to end my speech by wishing you
all a wonderful day here at the Shenzhen campus. May
your future be filled with success and joy.
Thank you.
